SAILING

Taking Part

The Club organizes a series of sailing events to promote sailing and engineering and appeal to a range of sailing skills and aspirations. The main centre of activity is around the Solent and members boats range from trailer sailors to ocean going yachts.

In addition to our Channel Squadron there is a NW Squadron comprising flotillas in North Wales, Northern Ireland and the Clyde.

Sailing has been an important sphere of Club activities for the past 30 years and has led to many friendships as well as providing much enjoyment to members, families and friends.

All members of The Institution are most welcome to join our rallies. Look over the programme and see what type of event would suit you best and come and see if you enjoy it.

Events

Events include passage races, nautical quests, rallies and dinners. In addition to local rallies the Club has had joint rallies with the REYC to Antwerp and the Normandy Landing Sites; and with the Offshore Cruising Club to France and regularly cruises the Channel Islands meeting members of CIGPE and inspecting many of the engineering works and places of interest in the Islands.

Other activities have included cruises to St Katherine's Dock in London, to France and Brittany and to the West Country. Club members have crossed the Atlantic and Pacific, visited St Petersburg cruised the Mediterranean, as well as the coast of Britain and Ireland.

Voyage Vache

For many years on the first weekend in December, the Club has sailed to Cowes on the Voyage Vaches when we joined the Ingenieures de France at a dinner. Last year we coupled this with a race from Portsmouth to Cowes.

Trophies

There are three trophies. The Smeaton Trophy and the Telford Goblet is for members and staff of the ICE who enter or skipper a yacht competing in the Round the Island Race. The Elvera Cup is for the most interesting log of a cruise in the current year by a member of the Club. The Smeaton Trophy is awarded to the yacht, which has the lowest quotient determined by dividing the boats finishing position in its class or sub-class by the number of starters in that class or sub-class. The Telford Goblet is awarded annually to the highest placed yacht in the IRC class.

Crews and Skippers

This year we are starting a “crews available / crews wanted” register. So whether you are an experienced or a novice sailor, but would like to do some sailing, let me know, and we’ll try to find you on a boat.

Further Information

If you need any further information on any matter, but particularly on crewing opportunities, how to enter for trophies or the programme generally, please contact Roger Hyde.

CONTRACT BRIDGE AND ANNUAL BRUNEL TROPHY COMPETITION

The Civil Engineers' Bridge Club organises the competition for the Brunel Trophy, which was presented to the club by Travers Morgan in 1990. The event is an annual all-day multiple teams-of-four event. The trophy itself is a handsome cut glass crystal bowl.

The most recent competition was held on 8 October 2010 at the Young Chelsea Bridge Club in Earls Court, London. Five teams entered and the competition was as always fierce.

The winning team was Mushrooms - consisting of Bill Linton partnering Tim Pelling and Dave Wing partnering Roland Gronau. The club Chairman Mike Cottell presented the trophy together with the glass tumblers to the winners. Congratulations are due to them all and well played to all the other players.

After the bridge the evening dinner was again taken in the nearby Little French restaurant. This is a very pleasant and intimate local restaurant which has a good and varied menu which our Chairman definitely recommends.

Photos of the players at the event are shown below.

Next year's event will be held at the Young Chelsea Bridge Club again on Friday 7 October 2011. If you are interested in playing please contact me and if you don't have a team or even a partner don't worry - if you let me know early enough I can usually find others to make up a team.

WALKING

Walks are arranged throughout the year

All our walks (we are now in our tenth year) aim to cater for the “average” walker if there is such a person.

The first and last walks of the year are normally pavement based, sometimes along the side of the River Thames

We believe in 5 to 10 miles, a pub lunch, flattish terrain, London in the winter and open countryside for the rest of the year.

If any of the above seems to fulfil your needs, please make contact – you will be assured of a warm welcome. (Attendances in 2006 varied from 15 to 25 peaking at 30 in September)

If you live too far away to join our walks, how about starting a similar group in your own area?

BRANCH ACTIVITY

NORTHERN IRELAND
The Northern Ireland Branch of the CEC is very active and holds various events throughout the year

Sailing
The Irish Sea Rally is held annually on the last weekend in June and the venue rotates round the Clyde, Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and North Wales. Boats gather on Friday or Saturday with dinner on Saturday evening. There is normally a local interest visit on the Sunday with dispersal thereafter.

Seniors Section
Membership of the Northern Ireland club is made up mainly of the retired engineers and their partners. This year the group was under the leadership of past chairman, Mark Lowry, with valuable assistance from the Regional Office. Following the very successful visit to the Grand Opera House in Belfast last December, the Spring outing is scheduled for Friday 15th May 2009. We are travelling to the West of the Province, to the Strule Arts Centre, in Omagh, Co Tyrone http://www.struleartscentre.co.uk

Golf
The Region's Golf Society sends a team to the annual Thomas Telford Trophy run by The Civil Engineers' Club

General
We are keen to expand our activities and some suggestions are Chess and Bridge teams to represent Northern Ireland in the annual competitions. Rambling and Hill Walking have also been considered. We are keen to hear from anyone interested in promoting these or any other activities. The Northern Ireland representative is:-
